Whispers
From the Smokehouse -
Volume 12 Number 1
Sweeping
across the land with spring and early summer are patriotic
holidays, parades, vacations, and memories. Pack a picnic
and follow I-81 to Natural Bridge for a view of Monacan life
(Gibbs, Burkley-Poindexter), or on to Strasburg’s History
Square and Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park to a campsite or lodge to
learn about two lively First Ladies (Taylor). Head west with
your camera and suitcase across the Jackson River to The
Greenbrier Resort where Jennie Calwell spent her youth (Bryan). Visit the Pigg River in
June for a Ramble (Greer). Find the Sandy River in Danville
(Moss), or Roanoke River in Ironto, between Roanoke and
Christiansburg (Pauley), and appreciate simpler times after
reading the fond childhood reminiscences (1950s, ‘60s, Moss;
1980s, ‘90s, Pauley) of Virginia women from two different
post-WWII generations. Put on an apron and prepare your own
Apricot Mousse and Pecan Pie (Melton, Hoover, Roosevelt). Or
just sit back on some shady porch and read this issue of
Blue Ridge Traditions aloud to your grandchildren or
parents.
Now available for tourists at all ten official Virginia
Welcome Centers on all the interstates, BRT welcomes you all
to this beautiful season and these historic, memorable
places. Happy May through July! See you again in August.
