Whispers
From the Smokehouse -
Volume 12 Number 1
Leap like the child on the front cover into the
landscapes inside our first BRT of the year. Slip
beneath the Blue Ridge and explore “The Cathedral” and
“The Magic Mirror” hidden far below (Pauley). Or balance
on a slippery stone and fish for trout in a secret pool
(Robison). Map new counties in the 1700’s (Greer). Ride
into the past and the
wilderness with an explorer of Jefferson’s era (Bryan),
and read about the sewing machine and a cherished locket
(Poindexter). Slip into a roadside restaurant for
morning chit-chat with octogenarians over their coffee (Brammer),
or into an Appalachian landscape of Appalachian Jack
Tales (Weatherly S.). Learn some Virginia history and
meet some memorable characters along the way.
BRT celebrates culture. Not so full of advertising that
it is difficult to sort the stories from the ads, this
magazine is receiving critical acclaim for its
scholarship and coverage of history, artists, and
Virginia life. It is being archived and collected at
libraries, schools, museums, and homes all over the
United States. BRT even has European subscribers. Our
online site, www.brtraditions.com is increasingly
popular, and will be expanding soon to include books and
“Theme Gift Boxes” of books and gifts designed to bring
a smile. In the near future, click onto our brand-new
web site, which is now under construction,
www.blueridgetraditions.com, for articles, gift ideas,
and events in the Blue Ridge region and beyond.
If you like this magazine and the rich worlds it offers
you, please subscribe. After this winter 2005 issue, BRT
will be available by subscription only. Subscriptions
are $18 a year. If someone wishes to purchase magazines
in bulk, for schools or special events, etc., they will
be available, as supplies last, in quantities of 10 for
$30. Orders must be placed with BRT before publication.
BRT should go to print by mid-April, mid-July, and
mid-October. Please call for details. This issue of BRT
offers you articles about camaraderie among long-time
friends, exploration, inventions, places to visit in
day, a little nostalgia and romance, and a lot to think
about. Read it. Give a subscription to a friend. Share
the culture! BRT is a bright spot in a world with
worries and woe. BRT. Believe it.
