Whispers From the Smokehouse: Volume 11, Number 5

Autumn and winter in the Blue Ridge region let us play in bright leaves  in a meadow [Pollard pastel on front cover], collect wild herbs  [Gibbs], see the allure of fox hunting [Mushko], take a spin on the  Blue Ridge Parkway to see the home of Mary Baldwin College and Woodrow  Wilson in Staunton [Huso], come home and bake old-fashioned gingerbread  [Poindexter], read of Fincastle’s Christmas Lights [Cronise], and sit by a fire and read BRT from cover to cover.

Learn about Contra dancing [Pauley], the accomplished ladies of the  Breckinridge family [Bryan]. Discover a ship named for this region  [Lohr] and an “after-Christmas” story for children that teaches  appreciation and contentment [Greer].

Explore. Don’t be satisfied with the surface of our culture. Dig under those autumn leaves for treasure, the history and tales that make our part of the world rich in tradition.
With this issue, our last of the year, BRT becomes available to the non-subscribing public through the sponsorship of all of BRT’s advertisers. Look at the ads. Then visit the businesses. There will be at least 100 magazines available at each one for you to pick up! Please spread the word by sharing these BRTs with everyone in your world.

Our billboard is on 220 just north of Rocky Mount, home of BRT. If you are out driving, stop in my bookstore and visit our downtown. There are so many things to do in this region. Join our journey by savoring all the region has.

In 2005 and beyond BRT becomes a quarterly and will appear in February, May, August, and November. Support us, the magazine with a little country and a lot of class. BRT. Give some for holiday gifts! Happy Holidays!
